The Big Horn County School District No. 2 Board of Trustees has been charting new ground with their idea to remodel Lovell High School instead of tearing the building down and building new. With approval from the School Facilities Commission to use major maintenance funds to bring the project up to the 5 percent conceptual plan, the board’s ideas are beginning to take shape.

The Town of Lovell and the Lovell Inc. economic development organization received good news Thursday when the State Loan and Development Board approved a Business Ready Community grant to renovate the Lovell Business Incubator Facility, which also houses the Lovell Inc. offices.

Big Horn County’s unemployment rate crept up from 8.4 percent in November of 2009 to 8.8 percent in December of 2009, putting the county at slightly double the unemployment rate observed in December of 2008 at 4.3 percent.

Opponents of genetically modified sugar beets have filed a request for a preliminary injunction last week in U.S. District Court for the Northern Division of California. If approved, the injunction could force farmers to return to planting traditional seeds in the future. The vast majority of U.S. farmers – about 95 percent – planted the seeds in question during 2009.

May knows a little bit about Lovell basketball tradition. During his senior year of 1985-86 at Lovell High School, he was a key member of the Lovell Bulldog squad that first ended the Wyoming Indian Chiefs’ 50-game winning streak, then defeated the Chiefs again for the state title two months later.

A strong group of seniors on their way out of the Lady Bulldogs volleyball program this year were recently recognized by coaches in the northwest conference and across the state. All four Lady bulldog seniors received all-conference honors and two players were selected for the all-state team.

The Lovell Lady Bulldogs finished the 2009 volleyball season with a fourth-place plaque, bringing a good ending to a great year of volleyball. The Lady Bulldogs’ efforts to place higher at State were thwarted by tough east competitor Sundance, who beat Lovell twice at the tourney.

When the first freeze of the fall happens, it is usually a sign to beet farmers to step up their harvest efforts and get the remainder of their beets out of the ground. But because of the severity and the long duration of the cold snap that began on Oct. 9 and continued for several days in the region, farmers are waiting in limbo with quotas limiting the amount of beets they are allowed to bring to the Western Sugar Factory in Lovell for immediate processing.

Despite attempts to de-rail the Bureau of Land Management’s plan to gather wild mustangs of the Pryor Mountain herd and permanently remove some of them from the range, the roundup began last Thursday. While the BLM continued through Wednesday to round up and process as many of the 190 horses on the range as possible, identifying those selected for adoption and letting others back on the range, horse advocates and several humane observers kept a close eye on the operations to ensure proper treatment of the horses.

The Bureau of Land Management issued a decision last week to perform a roundup and removal of horses from the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range beginning Tuesday, Sept. 1, but a federal lawsuit and request for injunction filed by horse advocates has the operation delayed by at least a few days.

The Big Horn County Relay for Life, now in its third year, has been an event that brings the community together in large numbers to fight against a disease that effects so many every day. Cancer is a disease that kills many people every year. The local Relay for Life, along with similar events held around the nation, brings people together to raise money, awareness and spirits to fight cancer.

Anthony Pease, 22, and Samantha Malcolm-Castaneda, 21, were arrested on Wednesday, July 15, and charged in connection with at least three Lovell burglaries and are being held at the Big Horn County Jail on $25,000 cash or surety bond.
