Martha Sue Carey

November 26, 2020

Martha Sue Carey, 78, passed away at the Billings Clinic in Billings, Mont., on Nov. 26, 2020.

Sue was born on May 16, 1942, in Middleton, Tenn., to Lyndall and Juanita Elizabeth (Witt) Barwick.  She spent most of her childhood in Phenix City, Ala.   She married James Franklin Carey on April 26, 1957 in Phenix City.  Because Jim was in the military, the couple moved frequently.  They were the parents of three daughters: Donna, Terry and Linda.

Sue became a police officer in 1972, joining the police force in Phenix City.  She became the head of the detective unit.  When she retired from the police force, her strong religious convictions sparked her to become a pastor.  Her first service opportunity was to be an assistant pastor in Idaho.  This is what brought she and Jim out west.  From Idaho the couple moved to Sundance and then to Ten Sleep, Wyo., where she was the pastor of The Mountain View Assembly of God Church for over 10 years before retiring and relocating to Basin, Wyo.

Sue was always a very service-oriented person.  She cared about everyone she came into contact with and was so kindhearted.  While in Ten Sleep she enjoyed working at the Ten Sleep Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jim in 2017, sister, Lillian Markel and brother, Pete Barwick. Survivors include her daughters, Donna (Michael) Leggett of Phenix City, Ala., Terry (Steve) Roundtree of Worland, Wyo., Linda (Mark) Sawyer of Basin, Wyo.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, 2020, at the Ten Sleep Cemetery with Allen Firnekas officiating. Online condolences may be made at www.bryantfuneralhomeonline.com.
