February 5-9 was SkillsUSA Week nationally. Lovell High School celebrated with events throughout the week.
SkillsUSA is a career and technical education organization helping members from middle school through college pursue skilled trades.
The week was full of activities, a guest speaker and a quiz bowl, said business teacher and SkillsUSA advisor Jode Kraft. The week precedes the competition for SkillsUSA at the high school, which culminates in the state tournament in late April at Casper College.

Governor emphasizes need for public notices in Wyoming newspapers

SARATOGA — Despite the advent of the internet and social media, Wyoming newspapers still serve as an important avenue for public notices — at least according to Governor Mark Gordon, who spoke at the 125th Annual Wyoming Press Convention in Casper on January 19.
Over the past several years, the Wyoming Legislature has seen a number of bills introduced which would remove public notices from the pages of Wyoming newspapers.

The Lovell Police Department received the following calls for the week of February 5 to February 11:
February 7: 3:35 a.m.- A welfare check was called in from Maverik on West Main St. Two individuals were reported to be sleeping and/or passed out in a car for over an hour while parked at the pump. An officer responded, and the driver of the car stated she had had a long day. The passenger was intoxicated. Family members were called, and one family member drove the car home while another drove the individuals home. There were no issues of note.

Sheriff’s report: Man steals the car that feeds him

The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Department received the following calls for the week of February 5 to February 11:
February 5: 4:54 a.m.- A horse was reported on the highway at milepost 42 on Highway 14A West near Lovell. The case was referred to highway patrol.
February 6: 11 a.m.- A dog at large was reported in Byron. A deputy responded and was unable to locate the dog.

Medicare scams reported across state

JACKSON — A Wyoming cybersecurity organization is warning of fraudsters targeting senior citizens in Medicare scams.
CyberWyoming reported in a weekly press release that an elderly resident in central Wyoming “unintentionally shared her Social Security number and/or Medicare number over the phone.”
The incident occurred late on a Friday afternoon, at a time when banks were closed. Medicare residents should log into their secure Medicare account or call 1-800-MEDICARE to report potential fraud.

New logo for Big Horn County Fair revealed as board considers jackpot event

Big Horn County Fair Board members and fair manager Cash Duncan presented a certificate to Jose Garay at the February 5 meeting. Garay’s design was chosen from all the entries in the fair logo contest.
Board member Tracy Haley ran the meeting as chair Luke Foss was not in attendance. New fair board member Becky Bates attended her first meeting since her appointment to the board by the commissioners.

Cordova carves up competition to win spelling bee

“Crookedly. C-R-O-O-K-E-D-L-Y. Crookedly.”
With that final correct spelling, Lovell Elementary School fourth grader Brett Cordova won the school spelling bee Friday morning at the LES Gym.
Cordova calmly sailed through multiple rounds of the contest as the field was gradually narrowed to the final five.
After Cordova won the contest, fourth grader Wyatt Hendershot and fifth grader Chloe Asay engaged in a spell-off for second place, and Hendershot gained the edge to place second, with Asay third.

Letters of support sought for Orchard Bench Road grant

Acting county engineer Matt Leonhardt told the Big Horn County commissioners on February 6 that letters of support are needed for a grant that would help the county redo Orchard Bench Road.

SBDC director chamber luncheon speaker Monday

The Lovell Area Chamber of Commerce membership luncheon will be held Monday, Feb. 19, at the Mustang Cafe from noon to 1 p.m.
The program will be given by Devan Costa-Cargill, who is the regional director of the Wyoming Small Business Development Center for Big Horn, Hot Springs, Park and Washakie counties. She is available to bring no-cost, confidential assistance to help business owners get the resources they need to succeed.
