Dan Laffin announces his retirement as Chief of Police

Lovell Police Chief Dan Laffin publicly announced his retirement on Tuesday.
“We would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation for the tremendous efforts and dedication that Chief Laffin brought to our community. We wish him all the best in his retirement,” mayor Tom Newman said in a press release.

A pair of classic and dazzling displays of Christmas lights tied this year for the Lovell Area Chamber of Commerce Christmas Lighting Contest, with two other top vote getters ineligible as winners in the two previous years.

Firemen provide food at Christmas once again

Members of the Lovell Volunteer Fire Department set up the traditional assembly line of donated food items Monday to put together the annual Christmas baskets given to area families in need, then fanned out throughout the fire district – essentially all of north Big Horn County – to once again provide joy and some tasty meals at Christmas.
Assistant fire chief Bob Mangus said the firemen made 170 baskets – actually boxes – this year, and as of Tuesday, only a handful had yet to be delivered or picked up.

Commodities Distribution

A USDA Commodities distribution is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 21, from 4 to 5:30 p.m.  Residents of Big Horn County may pick up commodities at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 520 Montana Ave., Lovell.
Volunteers will be distributing a variety of dried, fresh and canned foods.

I heard through emails and messages that you enjoyed the column about Christmas traditions. It is always nice to get feedback from friends who read the Chronicle from far and near. John Lennon penned a tune called “So, This Is Christmas.” The first lines are “So, this is Christmas and what have you done? Another year over and a new one just begun.” It is a season of reflection.

Grounded reopens as Magic Mountain Coffee

Sierra and Ben Bates have always wanted to own a business and found the perfect opportunity in taking ownership of Mountain Magic Coffee.
    Sierra worked for the coffee stand with the previous owner when it was called Grounded starting in March. As soon as the couple saw the stand was up for sale, they were interested in purchasing the business and keeping it locally owned.

Lovell resident appointed to Veterans Commission

Retired combat veteran and Lovell resident Nicolle Laffin was appointed to the Wyoming Veteran Commission this summer.
She is a commissioner for the 5th Judicial District, which serves Big Horn, Hot Springs, Park and Washakie counties. Laffin said she applied for the role and was nominated by the governor. Her term will last three years. Each state has it’s own individual veterans commission.
Laffin said she is not nervous for the work ahead, but rather excited and feels well supported already.

Book Buffet team wins LMS Challenge of the Books

The ability of a middle school student to read and retain knowledge was put to the test December 12 in the annual Lovell Middle School Challenge of the Books competition.
Four teams battled for Challenge supremacy, collaborating to answer a series of questions from library paraprofessionals Gwen Walker and Deanna Calvin.
Students read up to 12 books selected from the competition, then responded to a series of questions posed by Walker and Calvin with their answer in the form of the title and author of the book.

Continuous improvement a focus at Lovell schools

Big Horn County School District No. 2 amended their unpaid meal debt policy at the December 11 school board meeting.
The policy was amended so students on full pay status could not be denied a meal for unpaid student meal debt, however in actuality that never happened.
