Sheriff report: Bear reported ‘hanging out’ at Sunlight Lane

The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office received the following calls for the week of Aug. 13-18:

August 13: A deputy responded to a traffic complaint on North Mountain View Street in Byron of a vehicle speeding up and down the street and flinging gravel. A deputy took steps to keep an eye on the situation and conduct extra patrol.

A deputy assisted with a custody dispute at the Lovell Police Department, assisting because the couple in question reside in Cowley. The issue was resolved peacefully.

August 14: A deputy responded to a report of three horses out on Road 11½ near Lovell. The deputy responded within five minutes and drove the length of the county road but did not discover any horses on the road.

The sheriff’s office received a “be on the lookout” notification regarding a vehicle stolen from the Walmart parking lot in Cody. No contact was made in Big Horn County.

August 15: A deputy was asked to respond to the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area when a park ranger did not respond to a status query, but as the deputy was heading to the park, the ranger did respond.

August 16: A report was called in about two cows out on U.S. 14A east of Lovell. Since no deputy was in the area, the call was referred to the highway patrol, and when a deputy did respond later, cows were no longer at the site.

A traffic complaint was called in regarding an older male driving on the wrong side of the road on U.S. 310 and sometimes swerving into the ditch. The vehicle crossed the state line into Montana, and Montana Highway Patrol was notified.

Deputies assisted Probation and Parole with two home checks.

A report was called in regarding a small bear in a yard at a residence on Sunlight Lane east of Lovell. The bear reportedly moved to a neighbor’s house and “was possibly bothering chickens,” then returned to the original location and was said to be “hanging out in the neighborhood all morning.” Wyoming Game and Fish was notified and was later able to remove the bear.

After a cow was reported out on U.S. 14A near Byron, both a deputy and the owner responded and got the cow put away.

August 17: A deputy assisted the Lovell Police Department with a domestic dispute on Oregon Avenue in Lovell.

A deputy responded to Good 2 Go west of Lovell to a report of a deer struck by a vehicle. The deer was killed in the collision.

August 18: The county K9 officer responded to a request by the Lovell Police Department for a K9 search following a traffic stop. The alert was negative.

A deputy assisted a motorist (a truck and trailer) with changing a tire near the Horseshoe Bend Marina.
