Shumway breaks Bischoff 200-meter record

With numerous athletes staying home to prepare for the junior-senior prom later that night, a handful of Lovell thinclads traveled to the Thermopolis Pre-Regional Friday, and the young athletes turned in some strong performances.Perhaps the highlight of the meet was the performance of sophomore Kim Shumway, who broke Betsy Bischoff’s record in the 200-meter dash set in 2005. Shumway finished second to Rawlins racehorse Kereston Thomas, with a time of 25.67, breaking Bischoff’s record of 25.94. Thomas won at 25.42 and holds the Class 3A state record in both the 100 and 200.Coach Joshua Sanders named Shumway as the Lovell female athlete of the week.“She came around the curve behind the Thomas girl, then used the straightaway to get into a good stride,” Sanders said. “The girl pulled her and Kim got stronger down the straightaway and almost caught her. We couldn’t tell who won.“The Thomas girl does a good job getting out and running the curve. Once Kim gets to the straightaway, that’s a better part of the race for her. It was a fun race to watch.”In another highlight from Thermop, freshman Ameesha Anderson set two new personal records in the sprints, placing fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.11 and sixth in the 200 with a time of 29.13.“She looked fast,” Sanders said. “We have several fast freshman girls.Fellow frosh Lauren Hinckley placed 10th in the 100 at 14.63.In the only other running performance for the Lady Bulldogs, freshman Whitney Grant placed third in the 100-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 17.63, just 1/100th of a second off of her PR.“It was good to see that, breaking into the 17s again,” Sanders said. “That shows where she is.”In field events, Shumway placed second in the long jump with a leap of 15-10¼.“She’s very close to that 16-foot mark,” Sanders said. “In the last couple of weeks she’s been at 15-11 and 15-10. That’s really great to see.”Freshman Chayli McArthur placed third in the triple jump with a jump of 31-7, and she placed fourth in the high jump, clearing 4-4. Hinckley finished 16th in the long jump at 11-9¾.Sophomore Katie Hoover placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 30-3 ¾ and threw the discus 62-8. Samantha Stevens threw the shot 20-11 and the discus 59-2¾.“Katie’s been throwing well in the shot put,” Sanders said. “That’s twice in a row that she hit the 30-foot mark. She has made steady improvement there.”Boys resultsSanders named sophomore Kade Englert as the male athlete of the week. Englert placed second and qualified for State in the pole vault by clearing 11-6, a personal record.“Coach (Daniel) Robertson has been trying to get him to vault with more control, and it’s been helping him out,” Sanders noted.Englert also placed third in the high jump, clearing 5-8.Sophomore Calin McArthur won the 400-meter dash with a personal-record time of 57.02.“That’s not blazing, but it’s his best time,” Sanders said. “We’d like him to be in the low 56 or possibly the 55 range for the 1,600-meter relay.”Michael Brightly finished 20th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.82, and Aaron Monterde ran 13.37. Sanders said the Lovell lineup is pretty much set.“Every week we post the top four in every event, and for the most part that will answer the questions we have,” he said. “In some cases we had a run-off or a jump-off, and we will review this with our coaches, but we’re set for Regionals. People know where they’re at.”Action begins Friday at 9 a.m. and again Saturday at 9 for running events and field events.Class 2A will share the meet with both Class 1A and Class 4A teams.By David Peck
