Wyoming Hunger Initiative transitions to independent organization
CHEYENNE – The Wyoming Hunger Initiative, launched in 2019 as a signature initiative of First Lady Jennie Gordon through the Wyoming Governor’s Residence Foundation, has announced its transition from a program under the Wyoming Governor’s Residence Foundation to an independent nonprofit organization, as it has been granted tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(3) entity by the Internal Revenue Service.
The Wyoming Governor’s Residence Foundation was originally formed in 1989 for the purpose of preserving the historic and beautiful Wyoming Governor’s Residence and promoting and executing the specific charitable and educational projects of Wyoming’s First Spouse. Since its inception in 2019, Wyoming Hunger Initiative has served as a unifying force among anti-hunger organizations across the state. By elevating local efforts, providing strategic support and investing in sustainable solutions, the Initiative has reached all 23 counties and every Wyoming tribe.
The Initiative has raised and distributed millions in funding to food pantries, backpack programs, producers and hunger-relief organizations. Its innovative programs have set new standards for collaboration across sectors.
“From the beginning, Wyoming Hunger Initiative has been about empowering communities to fight food insecurity in ways that are local, lasting and uniquely Wyoming,” said First Lady Gordon. “As it becomes an independent organization, I am incredibly proud of the foundation we’ve built -- and confident in the team’s ability to carry this mission forward with strength and vision.”
The purpose of the transition to an independent Wyoming nonprofit organization is to ensure the Initiative’s continued commitment to ending hunger in Wyoming through collaboration, innovation and community-driven solutions, Gordon said. As an independent nonprofit organization, Wyoming Hunger Initiative will have greater flexibility to grow, deepen its impact and build new partnerships across the state and beyond, she said. It will continue its core mission to end hunger in Wyoming while pursuing new opportunities for outreach, education and systemic change.
Board members, staff and partners are working closely to ensure a seamless transition, with continued support from state and local stakeholders. The official transition took place September 30, 2025.
