Bell is third Artist in Residence at Bighorn Canyon

The third of four Artists in Residence (AIR) to work at Bighorn Canyon, Katrina Bell, will be in the park September 9-23.

“I am thrilled to be coming to Bighorn Canyon, because I am very captivated by its stunning landscapes and deep historical significance,” Bell said. “During my residency, I aim to explore the canyon’s rich cultural heritage through my photography. By capturing the stories and traditions that have shaped this extraordinary place, I hope to offer a deeper understanding of its significance and inspire a renewed appreciation for its natural and cultural treasures.”

Bell is a photographer based in Wisconsin, driven by a deep appreciation for the fusion of nature and art. Her mission is to capture the essence of the environment through her lens, hoping to create visual stories that forge a strong connection between viewers and the natural world.

Her passion for photography was sparked in 2016 during her first trip outside the United States. Recognizing the rarity of this opportunity, she dedicated herself to capturing every scene, person and moment she encountered. As she explored new landscapes, she became increasingly immersed in the beauty of the natural world. Photography became a means of finding peace and connection in the elements of earth, water and sky.

Join Bell for one or both of the following programs:

Guided Photo Walk and Shooting Session (September 14 at 10 a.m. at Sullivan’s Knob) -- This program combines a scenic hike with hands-on learning, allowing participants to practice capturing landscapes and wildlife. Bell will offer tips and demonstrations on how to capture stunning landscapes, interesting textures and wildlife behavior and provide real-time feedback and answer questions, helping participants apply new techniques in a practical setting. After the hike, participants will have the opportunity to share their favorite shots and discuss what they found captivating about their subjects.

Photo Gallery Exhibition (September 21 at 2 p.m. at the Bighorn Canyon Taggart Visitor Center) – Bell will display photographs that she captured during her residency. This event will offer an intimate look at her creative process, observations and the intended impact of her work. If feasible, participants from the Guided Photo Walk will have the opportunity to display their own captured shots, as well, celebrating their achievements and fostering a sense of community.
