Big Horn County swimmers join with Powell Panthers

The Powell High School Boys Swim and Dive team dove into its ‘23-24 season December 8. Lovell students Gabe Buchholtz, Hugh Carpenter, Conner Mayes and Taggart Shumway and Rocky students Will Fuller and Branton Moore are sharing their talents and hard work with PHS in the pool this season.

Competition started December 8 at the PAC (Powell Aquatic Center) with a triangular and will end at the state meet in Laramie Feb. 16-17.

Sophomore Carpenter has qualified for State in seven of eight swimming events: the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 500 free, 100 back, 100 fly and 200 IM.

Sophomore Fuller is qualified in the 50 free, 100 free, 100 back, 100 fly and 200 IM. Junior Mayes “Q’ed” in the 50 free,100 fly and 200 IM.

Junior diver Shumway has qualified in the 6 dives and 11 dives events.

 

WORLAND PRE-INVITE

The team traveled to Worland for two meets over the cold weekend, including the pre-invite Friday, Jan. 12, with Worland, Riverton and Cody. The meet kicked off with the 200 medley relay (50 yards each of backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle). Fuller and Carpenter swam on the A relay and finished in third for 24 points. The B relay with Mayes and Moore finished fifth.

Fuller nabbed fifth in the 200 free and fourth just shy of the qualifying time in the 100 breaststroke. Mayes finished fourth in the 50 free and sixth in the 500 free. Junior Moore swam a 32.74 to finish 13th in the 50 free and sixth in the 100 backstroke.

Shumway’s 1-meter dives scored in third place (175.10), and he finished ninth in the 100-yard freestyle. Carpenter’s time of 5:57.44 in the 500 free was good for third, and he finished third in the 100 breaststroke, too.

Freshman Buchholtz cruised to seventh in the 500 free and seventh in the 100 breaststroke.

200 Free Relay: A with Fuller placed third; B including Shumway, Moore and Buchholtz, sixth.

400 Free Relay: A with Carpenter placed third; B with Buchholtz and Mayes finished sixth.

Team scores: Riverton 389, Powell 290, Cody 287, Worland 99.

 

WORLAND INVITE

Saturday turned out to be a frigid day outside of the aquatic center. Inside, the teams battled it out again, adding Jackson Hole team to the pool. Team scores had Riverton on top again with 377 points, Cody 311, Powell 216, Worland 129 and Jackson 118.

Mayes grabbed seven points in the 200 free with at 2:13.37 and fifth in the 100 breaststroke 1:20.58, good for 10 points.

Fuller finished fourth in the 50 free, good for 11 points (24.63) and third in the 100 backstroke for 12 points (1:02.78).

Shumway swam a 27.93 in the 50 free, good for five points, and scored a 157.60 in the 1-meter, diving for nine points.

Moore improved his 50 free time down to a 31.85 and swam the 100 free in 1:18.03 for two points.

Buchholtz swam the 500 free in 7:05.24, good for seventh place and seven team points, and the 100 backstroke in 1:15.62, also good for seven and seven.

Relays: 200 Medley A with Fuller, swam a 1:59.57, good for third; B including Shumway and Buchholtz (2:12.91). 200 Free Relay: A with Shumway and Mayes fourth (1:50.94). 400 Free Relay: A with Fuller and Mayes second (3:57.74).

 

COMING UP

The team will travel to Cody today (Thursday) for a dual set for 5 p.m. and to the Lander Valley Invitational Saturday, Jan. 20, starting at 11 a.m.
