Bighorn Canyon recreation area preparing for Fall

The summer season has come to an end, and park staff at the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area have begun making annual preparations for fall and winter.

The marinas at both Horseshoe Bend and Ok-A-Beh closed on September 2.

Campgrounds at Black Canyon and Dayboard 9 remain open, but floating restrooms and docks have been removed.

The courtesy docks at Barry’s Landing, Horseshoe Bend and Ok-A-Beh will remain in the water into November or December or until the lake starts to freeze. Boat ramps remain open all winter, however, access and use depend upon snow, ice and road conditions.

Fees will be collected at campgrounds through September. Water facilities will be winterized as soon as temperatures start dropping to keep them from being damaged by freezing temperatures. Campgrounds remain open year-round but will be fully winterized no later than October 1. There will be no fees at that time for camping until next season.

The park is far from closed. Bighorn Canyon offers wonderful year-round boating, fishing, hiking and educational opportunities.
