Bighorn Canyon road work continues in recreation area
Fort Smith — The major 2024 road maintenance project is in week seven in the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area.
During the week of May 13, crews have continued working in the South District near Lovell. Crack sealing operations at the Horseshoe Bend Parking Lot were to start on May 14. During this phase of operations visitors may encounter partial and full closures of both parking lots that could include day and night closures, Bighorn Canyon Chief of Interpretation Christy Fleming said, adding that one of the two parking lots will be open at all times.
During this timeframe work will also be continuing in the North District.
Throughout the summer, contractors will work Monday through Friday, Fleming said. Currently, road work is not planned for weekends or holidays. The work times may be varied, but most activity will be conducted between the hours of 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Some parking areas may be temporarily closed to allow contractors the ability to finish their work safely and efficiently, Fleming said, adding that the closures will be announced ahead of time.
Schedules and locations of work are subject to change based on weather. Visitors are encouraged to check park social media accounts for the latest updates.
