Bighorn Canyon road work underway

As of Monday, April 1, Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area roads and parking areas on both ends of the park are or will be under construction.

There are basically three stages of the project that will last from April into August. Milling and asphalt work, parking lots and patching will be completed in April and May. Crack seal work will be completed in May and June. Chip seal is anticipated to be completed the first two weeks of August. Schedule variations and weekly updates will be posted on the Bighorn Canyon Facebook page.

Contractors will work Monday through Friday. Currently, they are not planning to work weekends or holidays. The work times may be varied but will mostly be conducted between the hours of 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Some parking areas and the Bighorn Canyon Taggart Visitor Center may be temporarily closed to allow contractors the ability to finish their work safely and efficiently. These closures will be announced ahead of time.

For road work, visitors should expect traffic control with one lane of traffic and up to 30-minute delays.

The following is the schedule for the next three weeks:

Week one of the project, beginning April 1 -- Contractors will be completing survey work.

Week two, beginning April 8 -- Shoulder work will begin on the Bad Pass Road (park south boundary to Barry’s Landing). Single lane closures will be in effect while work is being conducted.

Week three, beginning April 15 -- Crews will be milling and patching along the Bad Pass Road. There will be single lane closures during the daytime while work is being conducted and continued single lane closures at night due to lane excavation.

Schedules and locations of work are subject to change based on weather.
