The ability of a middle school student to read and retain knowledge was put to the test December 12 in the annual Lovell Middle School Challenge of the Books competition.
Four teams battled for Challenge supremacy, collaborating to answer a series of questions from library paraprofessionals Gwen Walker and Deanna Calvin.
Students read up to 12 books selected from the competition, then responded to a series of questions posed by Walker and Calvin with their answer in the form of the title and author of the book.
The question might come in the form of a quote from the book, such as, “Nearsighted but not stupid” with the answer being “Outcasts” by John Flanagan, or as a clue from the book, such as “A lion, a wolf, a fox and a boar” with the answer being “Rise of the Wolf” by Curtis Jobling.
The team had 30 seconds to huddle and come up with a response after each question, with the team captain stating the answer after the huddle. If the team answers incorrectly, the opposing team had 15 seconds to come up with the correct response.
The four LMS teams were:
On the Same Page – Jaycie Allen, Ava Edwards, Addie Weber, Kelce Winterholler, Kyson Crosby and Weston Hendershot.
The MJCs – Ariana Nuttall, Christy Aagard, Arianna Snyder, Bella Gallagher, Ethan Hendershot and Jayden Hunder.
Book Buffet – Kelsey Mangus, Sofia Khan, Toree Herman, Kendra Allen, Easton Morgan and Oakley Anderson.
Reading Rascals – Macie Winterholler, Oakley Bischoff, Lillian Henley, Janelle Asay, Kobi Jameson and Renaka Lauhoff.
Round one saw Book Buffet top Reading Rascals 44-41, and in round two On the Same Page beat the MJCs 63-28.
Book Buffet then won the title 53-51 over On the Same Page and will advance to the area challenge in Basin on Wednesday, Feb. 21.
