Champs return to a huge celebration as they look to Regionals
The Lovell Mustangs returned home Monday evening to a several-block-long escort of fire trucks (with players riding on top), police and sheriff vehicles and dozens of fans. The convoy cruised Main Street in Lovell, then continued on to Cowley, and after making the rounds there, stopped at the American Legion Baseball field for a celebration.
Manager Michael Jameson said he was moved by the turnout and also appreciative of the fan support in Sheridan. More than once during the tournament, he said, he told his team to turn around and look to the stands to see the people who crossed the mountain to support the team.
“Our communities are just absolutely amazing,” he said. “That’s every bit of what you dream about, winning the state championship and running the fire trucks. I can’t say enough about all of the support. I’m sure that, in every game, we had the majority of the crowd. Just seeing everybody there cheering and guys that have coached these boys in other sports and people making the trip over for multiple games was just awesome.
“And that’s what I just told those guys, that this is what it’s all about, these big moments and things that you’re never going to forget. Having such huge support is just exactly what you dream of when you think about winning the state championship. It was everything and more than we could have ever asked for.”
Regional tournament
The Mustangs will play in their first American Legion regional tournament next week in Burley, Idaho, facing host team Burley in the opening round on the evening of Thursday, Aug. 7, at 7:30 p.m.
Mustangs board member Nick Wilson said the program could use some financial help to pay for travel expenses to the Regional Tournament. Fans and supporters may access the team Venmo account, which is @Mustangs-Post-11, or contribute by mail at Lovell Mustang Baseball, P.O. Box 254, Lovell, WY 82431.
