Changing of the guard and awards at Post 11 meeting Tuesday evening
Robert Boyd Stewart American Legion Post 11 installed new officers at the post’s regular meeting Tuesday evening at the Lovell Fire Hall, but one member in particular drew special attention.
Rich Fink, the longtime commander of Post 11 reinvigorated the organization, was honored for his years of service in presentations made by new post commander Nicolle Laffin and Department Commander Russell Stafford of Powell.
Fink has served in the U.S. military for 57 years, most of his time in the Wyoming Army National Guard, and he has been the commander of Post 11 since 2012, increasing the membership of the organization, re-establishing regular meetings, leading military graveside services and organizing Memorial Day, Veterans Day and Flag Day programs.
“Without you guys, I wouldn’t be here,” Fink told the assembled Legion members. “All of the veterans is what draws me into it. You are great people, like a family. Thank you for your service to the armed forces and to your families. I’ll still be here every (second) Tuesday.
“Nicolle has pulled it all together and will do a great job.”
Laffin is the new officer in charge as commander of Post 11, and Fink will remain active as vice commander with Stuart Morthole as the adjutant, Bruce Wolsey as the finance officer and Jim Thomas as the chaplain.
Stafford led the change of command and officer installation and swearing in ceremonies, and District 4 commander Bobby Werner of Greybull presented two special awards to the post: a citation of meritorious service for being the first post in Division 3 to reach 50 percent of the post’s membership goal by August 31, 2024, and a certificate of merit for being the first post in Division 3 to reach the department goal of 75 percent by November 30.
Laffin presented both Fink and his wife, Janice, with certificates of appreciation in recognition of their “outstanding service and assistance, which contributed to the advancement of the American Legion programs and activities dedicated to God and Country.”
Laffin also presented Fink with a large framed award containing an American Legion banner, Wyoming American Legion challenge coins, plus a past commander pin. Stafford also presented Fink with a Wyoming challenge coin.
District 4 adjutant and district chaplain Steve Olsen of Powell prayed for the post leadership following the installation ceremony and also presented a ceremonial gavel to Laffin.
