Cowley Town Council approves fireworks ordinance
The Cowley Town Council held its regular December meeting last week and discussed fireworks ordinances, Log Gym usage, building ordinances and the Cowley Christmas celebration.
One of the main actions of the meeting was final approval of Ordinance 338 regulating fireworks within town limits. Council members raised concerns that the original 200-foot restriction from public buildings could unintentionally place many residents in violation. The ordinance was amended to reduce the restricted distance to 100 feet, while maintaining language prohibiting reckless use that endangers life or property.
Council members also discussed enforcement, particularly after midnight, noting it would largely depend on complaints being called in and routed to the sheriff’s office. Officials emphasized the ordinance provides accountability, especially if fireworks cause damage or start a fire. With the amendment adopted, the council voted unanimously to approve the measure.
The council also considered Ordinance 339, adopting the International Building Code, including commercial and residential standards. Discussion focused on ensuring the code covered major construction requirements and provided clear, consistent guidelines. Council members noted the adoption strengthens the authority of the building inspector and reduces repeated council involvement, and the ordinance was approved on its second reading.
The council received updates on several major town utility projects, including planned water transmission line replacement from the well and airport into town, upcoming in-town water line design work funded through the State Revolving Fund and continued progress on meter replacements, now reported to be more than halfway complete.
Council members also noted the Cowley Christmas celebration was a big success, drawing strong community participation and positive feedback. The event was praised for its welcoming atmosphere and smooth organization.
The council also discussed community use of the Log Gym, focusing on access priorities including gym members. Council members acknowledged the need to balance school and organized group use with public access and agreed there should be a clear, easy way for residents to view and understand the Log Gym schedule.
The next regular meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m.
