Cowley youth rodeo sees good turnout on Saturday

The Water of Life Church sponsored the fourth annual Cowley Youth Rodeo on Saturday, May 17.

“It is a beginner rodeo for kids in the Big Horn Basin that is the only one around here that I know of,” Pastor Johannes Slabbert said.

This rodeo is slightly different than most other youth rodeos, Slabbert said. It caters to youth just beginning to explore their desires to participate in the events that don’t have the opportunities to travel and compete.

“We cater to these kids by limiting our entries to those we know fit into certain categories,” co-organizer Christen Grant said. “That gives each kid an opportunity to learn, gain experience and confidence while facing similar competitors.”

The rodeo had many volunteers willing to help put on the event and provide instruction to the beginners. Awards were given to the top performers and all entry fees will go toward helping put on next year’s rodeo.

“We run mostly on donations and sponsorships,” Grant said. “We are grateful to the Cowley Riding Club for allowing us to use the rodeo grounds and concession stand.”

The overall winners in their respected age divisions were James Hahn, Hendrik Slabbert and Clayton Thompson.
