First-year Lady Grizz cheer squad places well at State Spirit
The Rocky Mountain cheerleading squad competed at the State Spirit Competition on Friday at the Ford Wyoming Center in Casper, turning in a strong showing in its first season as a program and the first year under new head coach Sheril Slater.
The team competed in two events, placing second in 2A Game Day and sixth in 3A All-Girl Cheer Stunt. Game Day cheer highlights teamwork, enthusiasm and crowd interaction, mirroring the atmosphere of a packed gym on game night. All-Girl Cheer Stunt features small-group stunts that showcase strength, control and teamwork.
The Rocky Mountain cheer squad included seniors Emma Collins, Lily George and Emma Sponsel; juniors Lily Bauwens and Jameeliv Brost; and freshmen Nora Kougl and Adynley Johnson.
Assistant cheer coach Amy Hedges said the team faced a demanding week leading up to the competition but responded with determination.
“Even though we are a brand-new team, and most of them have never cheered before, these girls stepped up with courage, heart and grit through one of the most challenging weeks of the year,” Hedges said. “They supported each other and flat out refused to quit. They’re tough.”
Slater said the team showed significant growth over the course of the season, both individually and as a group.
“Throughout the season, the girls have grown tremendously both individually and as a team,” Slater said. “They have put in work during and outside of practice to learn cheer techniques, cheers and dances. Their dedication has helped build strong bonds, and they have become a close, supportive group that is truly a joy to watch.”
Slater said the squad has learned the importance of trust and teamwork, especially in competition routines where every role matters.
“They’ve learned how strong and capable they are, both physically and mentally,” she said. “Each routine and stunt depends on everyone working together and giving full effort.”
While competition season has wrapped up, the Lady Grizz will continue cheering on the sidelines for Rocky Mountain basketball games for the rest of the season. The squad is also preparing to host Junior Cheer Camps for elementary and middle school students, giving younger students a chance to experience cheerleading while showcasing the work behind the performances.
