Fourth grade wins LES food drive contest
Lovell Elementary School wrapped up the annual student food drive Monday, with all of the cans and non-perishable food items gathered and boxed up by members of the student council.
The food is gathered each year for the Lovell Volunteer Fire Department’s Christmas food baskets that are distributed to families just ahead of the holidays.
This year students gathered 1,296 items, down from last year’s record 3,446 items, but co-organizer Gwen Walker said the drive started about a week later than usual.
The class that gathered the most items was the fourth grade at 347, earning the class a party, and second place went to the fifth grade at 309, by far the most active classes.
Walker said the student council leadership team consisted of Madison Hecker, Cherelle Nicholls, Taylor Ellis, Jeff Armstrong, Jodi Baxendale and herself.
