Cowley 2nd Ward member Iris Gard has been called to serve in the Finland Helsinki Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She began her missionary service on Monday, March 2, starting with a week of at-home training before reporting to the Missionary Training Center. She will then travel to Finland, where she has been assigned to teach and serve in the Finnish language.

Gard spoke last week in the Cowley 2nd Ward as part of her missionary farewell. In her remarks, she shared the personal reasons behind her decision to serve.

“My reason for going on a mission is both simple and personal,” she said. “I am going because I am called to the work of His love.”

Quoting from the New Testament, she continued, “As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love” (John 15:9).

Gard described missionary service as her “choice responsibility” and said she feels deeply committed to sharing the message of Christ with others.

“I know my Savior has improved my life,” she said. “And I know that if I go, I will be given opportunities to bring others to that same love.”

She added that she has faith the Lord will prepare people to hear His word and that she can serve “as His mouthpiece and hands,” helping to spread light and joy.

Gard is the daughter of Steven and Virginia Gard. She currently lives with her father and Lauren Shumway.

She will be serving in the Finland Helsinki Mission, which covers the country of Finland. The LDS Church has maintained a continuous presence in Finland since 1954. The Book of Mormon has been translated into Finnish, and today there are approximately 5,000 members worshipping in about 30 congregations across the country.

Finland, a Nordic nation in northern Europe, is known for its rich history, strong educational system and unique language. Learning Finnish is considered challenging for many English speakers, but Gard said she is eager for the opportunity to immerse herself in both the language and culture.

Gard is expected to serve for 18 months. Friends and family say they are proud of her commitment and look forward to hearing about her experiences as she begins this new chapter of service abroad.
