Golfers finally get back on the links in Cody
After a pair of meets were cancelled by cold weather, the Lovell High School golf team competed at the Cody Invitational Friday as they were finally able to continue their spring season. Teams from around the Big Horn Basin competed in the tournament while Lovell golfers continued working to improve their scores.
For the boys, Jaxon Hayes led Lovell with a score of 99, finishing tied for 28th overall. Weston Hendershot followed with a 110, Tyler Wilkerson shot a 111, Kade Durtsche finished with a 118, Mason Leithead shot a 124, Jasper Lopez finished with a 125, Hayden Workman shot a 135 and Aren Olsen finished with a 136.
Head coach Dane Robertson said not many of the boys were happy with how they played in Cody.
“We definitely posted some high scores, and we need to bring those down quite a bit to be remotely competitive, but we’re working on it,” Robertson said.
On the girls side, MaKinli Mowery had a career-best round, shooting a 100 to place eighth overall. Kenley Wilson finished with a 114.
Robertson was especially excited about Mowery’s performance and said he was happy to see her post her career best round. He also mentioned that while she will compete for Greybull’s newly formed golf team next year, Lovell is glad to see her continuing to improve this season.
The weather in Cody also played a role during the tournament. After weeks of difficult spring weather, golfers were met with sunny skies and almost no wind. Robertson joked that the team may have been “like vampires in the night and ill-prepared for the sunshine with no wind” after spending so much time practicing in rough conditions.
Lovell will next travel to Lander on Friday for the Lander Invite. Robertson said he looks forward to seeing what the team can do.
