Greta Godfrey Workman

July 11, 1932 – Dec. 10, 2024

On Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2024, Greta Godfrey Workman, 92, of Lovell passed away at her daughter’s home near Otto. 

Greta was born in Cowley on July 11, 1932, to Dick and Alda Godfrey. She attended and graduated from Cowley High School. She was active in speech and drama and led the high school band as the drum majorette. She attended Denver Business College. Dancing was the social activity of her generation. 

She met Preston Duncan Workman at a dance. They were married March 20, 1954, in Billings. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1980. They were married for 58 years. After their marriage they lived in Cowley, Manderson, Sheridan, Greybull, Worland and Billings before settling in Lovell for the next 60 years. They had two daughters, Marla and Trudy. 

Greta and Pres enjoyed square dancing, bowling, water skiing and playing tennis as young adults. They were involved in the early days of Lovell’s melodramas and variety shows. 

She worked as a secretary for the Forest Service for many years. Later, she attended Northwest Community College in Powell and Eastern Montana College in Billings, where she graduated with high honors. She then taught English and speech and drama at Lovell Middle School for more than 20 years. 

After retirement, she and her husband had the joy of serving as family history missionaries and as workers in the Billings Montana Temple. They also enjoyed spending many winters in Quartzite, Arizona, and reconnecting with their extended family.

Greta was preceded in death by her parents, Erastus Dudley “Dick” Godfrey and Alda Dale Peterson Godfrey; husband Preston; daughter Trudy; and brothers Dudley “Dick,” William “Bill,” Sidney, Dean and Gene.

She is survived by her daughter, Marla (Norman) Winters; siblings Dennis Godfrey and Sharon Blackburn; grandchildren Amy (Matt) Gardner, Patricia Casey, Cliff (Meredith) Winters, A. Ryan Cohen, Rachel Winters, Victoria (Brandon) Willis, Cozette Winters, Scott (Stephanie) Winters and Lisa Winters; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Services will be Monday, Dec. 23, at 10 a.m. at the Lovell Stake Center, with visitation the hour before. Burial will be in the Cowley Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by Haskell Funeral Home and Bishop Michael Hendershot.
