Grizzlies compete well with the best in Lander

Battling the top athletes in the region, the Rocky Mountain Middle School Grizzlies more than held their own at the Best of the Best track and field meet in Lander last Tuesday, May 13, with several top 10 finishes.

There were 37 teams competing in the meet.

Three RMMS athletes placed second at the meet. Sawyer Bassett placed second out of 27 competitors in the eighth-grade long jump, leaping 14-7, just 3/4 of an inch off the first-place jump of Bradlee McFadden of Cody. She also placed seventh in the triple jump at 30 feet, eighth in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 18.33 and ninth in the 200-meter hurdles in 33.92.

Eighth grader Jaxx May placed second in the 400-meter dash in a time of 56.94, and Benson Jolley placed second in the eighth-grade pole vault, clearing 9-6. May also placed seventh in the 200-meter dash in 25.46.

Rowan Hanusa tied for third in the eighth-grade pole vault at 8 feet, and the team of Hanusa, Jolley, May and Jaxson Sponsel placed third in the 1,600-meter relay in a time of 4:10.93.

Sixth grader Tianna Christiansen placed fourth in the seventh-grade 200-meter hurdles in a field of 24, running the hurdles in 34.12, and she placed fifth in the seventh-grade pole vault, clearing 6-6, and ninth in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 18.87, a new school record. She also competed in the 200-meter dash.

Seventh grader Taylor Grandalen placed sixth in the high jump, clearing 4-4.

Wyatt Blank placed seventh in the seventh-grade 400-meter dash in 1:02.91 and seventh in the triple jump, stretching for 31-4.

Hudson Moore placed eighth in the seventh-grade triple jump, hitting the sand at 30-6.

Elle Ganoung finished 10th in the seventh-grade girls triple jump with a leap of 28-4½, and Brooks Brost finished 10th in the seventh-grade high jump, clearing 4-6.

Other individuals competing in Lander were Jolley in the 200-meter hurdles, Sponsel and Brost in the triple jump and Dally Malson in the shot put and discus.
