Halloween safety tips for kids and families
COSTUME SAFETY
Be Seen: Choose light-colored costumes or tape so drivers can spot kids easily.
Proper Fit: Make sure costumes aren’t too long or baggy to prevent tripping.
See Clearly: Use face paint instead of full masks when possible.
Safe Props: Use soft or flexible materials, avoid sharp swords or sticks.
Weather Ready: Layer up or wear warm clothes under costumes if it’s cold.
TRICK OR TREATING SAFETY
Adult Supervision: Always have an adult or be in safe groups.
Plan Ahead: Stick to familiar, well-lit areas and agree on a route and return time.
Cross Safely: Use sidewalks and crosswalks; make eye contact before crossing.
Walk, Don’t Run: Move carefully between houses and watch for uneven sidewalks.
Be Courteous: Respect lights that are off—those homes may not be participating.
CANDY CHECK
AFTER
Inspect First: Don’t eat treats until an adult has checked them.
Watch for Allergies: Read labels carefully.
Skip the Sketchy Stuff: Discard items unwrapped or homemade from strangers.
Go Easy: Enjoy candy in moderation to avoid stomach aches or sugar crashes.
DRIVING AND NEIGHBORHOOD
Slow Down: Drive carefully and stay alert for kids crossing unexpectedly.
Headlights On: Use headlights early in the evening for extra visibility.
Clear the Way: Remove hoses, decorations, or obstacles from porches / lawn.
Pet Safety: Keep excited pets indoors to avoid accidental fear or bites.
FAMILY COMMUNICATION
Charged Phones: Older kids should carry a charged phone for emergencies.
Stay Connected: Use GPS or texting to check in along the way.
Curfew Time: Set a clear time to be home.
Emergency Plan: Teach kids what to do if they get lost, find a trusted adult or go to a well-lit public area.
