James ‘Jimmy’ Emmett Lindsay
Feb. 2, 1932 – March 30, 2025
James “Jimmy” Emmett Lindsay passed away on March 30, 2025, in Fairburn, South Dakota, a town he had called home with his sitser, Clara, for the past 14 years.
Jimmy was born on February 2, 1932, in Byron to Clarence Lee and Hilda (Emmett) Lindsay in a one-room bunkhouse at his grandparents’ place. His delivery was aided by his great-aunt Raye Lindsay, who was the town’s only nurse. He is the oldest of five children, including Lee Walter Lindsay of Harrah, Washington, Clara Lindsay Smith of Fairburn, Georgia, Poage Faul of Bismarck, North Dakota, and Roberta Poage Walters of Corvallis, Washington.
Jimmy attended Powell High School. He began his working career in the oil fields in Lovell, then worked several years for the Pepsi-Cola Company in Worland before moving to Summer, Washington, where he worked in a plastics factory.
Jimmy married Gloria June Knutson on June 21, 1961, in Powell and enjoyed helping to raise four stepchildren, Linda Camara, Lana (Dennis) Craig of Laramie, Darrel (Chris) Hembroff of Bonney Lake, Washington, and Danny Hembroff of Puyallup, Washington. The couple lived in Wyoming and Washington prior to moving to Dickinson, North Dakota, after retirement to be near their children and granchildren.
He enjoyed the outdoors and treasured fishing, taking great pleasure in designing intricate fishing lures. He was also a master gardener. In fact, there was very little he couldn’t grow, which flourished into his hobby as an expert fix-it man, often fixing items considered well beyond repair. However, his most cherished title was granpa, which he relished.
Upon the passing of his beloved wife in 2012, Jimmy moved to Fairburn. There, he enjoyed the company of his sister and niece and nephew and continued his love of the outdoors, taking early morning trips to area fishing holes. He was also an avid reader, enjoying western paperbacks, which he could finish in a few hours.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his treasured wife, Gloria; brother Lee, who passed away in 2018; stepdaughter Linda, who passed away in 2018; parents; and stepfather Robert B. Poage.
He is survived by three sisters, three stepchildren, 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Burial services will be held at a private ceremony on July 26, at 10 a.m. in Byron, where Jimmy will be laid to rest in the Lindsay section of the Byron Cemetery.
