JV Lady Grizz split weekend games at Big Horn Basin tournament
The Rocky Mountain junior varsity girls battled through a busy weekend and turned in a solid showing at the Big Horn Basin Classic.
The Lady Grizz opened tournament play Friday morning against the Cody Fillies and fell 37-15. Brooklyn Larsen and Sawyer Bassett led the team with 4 points each, while Charlee Welling, Leah Haslem and Kennedy Brimhall added 2 points apiece. Bassett was the top rebounder with six boards, and Larsen pulled down four.
Rocky Mountain bounced back in its next game with a high-scoring effort against the Wind River Cougars, winning 30-10 in a game shortened to two quarters due to Wind River’s limited numbers. Avery Thomas led the Lady Grizz with 10 points, followed by Leah Haslem with 6, while Brimhall and Larsen each scored 5. Thomas also led the team on the boards with seven rebounds, and Brimhall added five.
In the final game of the weekend, the Lady Grizz dropped a hard-fought contest to the Wyoming Indian Chiefs, 56–34, on Saturday. Larsen paced the team with 9 points, while Welling, Haslem and Bassett each finished with 6. Larsen recorded 8 boards, and Bassett added six.
With several junior varsity players also logging significant varsity minutes, assistant coach Stacey Haslem said the team continues to show growth despite a demanding schedule.
“These ladies have been playing many games and minutes. I see improvement with each game. I especially enjoy watching how hard they play until the very end,” she said.
The Lady Grizz will host the Greybull Buffs on Friday before traveling to Shoshoni on Saturday. Head coach Justin Moss has canceled the remaining C team (freshman) games due to roster limitations and the start of conference play.
“With our low numbers and the beginning of our conference portion of the season, we felt it was best for our program to forgo the C team games,” Moss said.
