Kenneth Asay

Kenneth “Ken” Asay, 93, passed away Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, at Westward Heights Care Center in Lander, Wyoming.

Kenneth David Asay was born April 5, 1931, in Lovell to John H. and Evelyn M. (O’Donnell) Asay. He received his education in Lovell before enlisting in the United States Navy, where he served from 1948 to 1952. Ken was baptized into the Catholic faith and served as an altar boy during his youth.

On September 24, 1952, Ken married Shirley F. Traweek in Billings. The couple made their home in Pavillion, Wyoming, where they lived from 1967 until 2024.

Ken worked in the insurance and oil industries before discovering his true passion with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. He worked as a game warden for two years, then spent three years as an assistant unit manager at the Yellowtail Habitat. He later served as a unit manager, overseeing one-third of the state of Wyoming for 20 years, retiring in 1987.  Following retirement, Ken volunteered and served on the CWC Rodeo Board and the Save Ocean Lake Project.

Ken had a deep love for the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and studying wildlife and land management. His family fondly remembers him referring to Canada geese as his “babies.”  He also loved spending time at the family cabin in the Big Horns.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Asay; parents John and Evelyn Asay; grandsons Craig A. Asay, Nathan Lacey and Joseph Lahnert; brothers John “Jack,” George “Tom,” Jerome “Jerry,” Ronald and William Asay; and sisters Margaret Madsen, Catherine Elizabeth “Betty” Wallace Dickemper, Evelyn Stassinos and Rosemary Asay.

Ken is survived by his son, David R. Asay, daughters Jacquelyn R. Asay and Linda K. (Tim) Asay-Glenn, sister Carole Ann (Chuck) Meyer, eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 2, at 9 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home, with military graveside rites following at Mountain View Cemetery. A viewing was held one hour prior to the service.
