Lady Bulldog eighth graders split with Powell and Cody
On Friday, Nov. 21, the Lovell eighth-grade girls basketball teams took the drive to Worland to compete in a quad where they played two contests -- one against Powell and one against Cody.
To start with, the girls showed their worth on the court, beating Powell 30-27.
“I thought the girls played extremely well,” head coach Chris Edwards said. “Powell had been a team that typically beat this group of girls, but we were able to pull out a three-point victory. Our defense allowed us to stay close to Powell the whole game.”
There were a few turnovers that could have been prevented, Edwards noted, but the Lovell defense was able to make up for it.
“Powell has some really good players in the post, and guards that can handle the ball, but Taylor Henderson was able to play around them, scoring 12 points on the night,” he said. With Henderson’s 12 points, she was the highest scoring Bulldog for that game. Other high scorers were Oakley Anderson with 10 points and Laney Felkins with 7. Edwards said Anderson did a phenomenal job against the opposing guards. The Bulldogs also had a chance to shoot an astonishing 30 free throws.
After the Powell game, the girls were set to take on Cody, a game that was a lot tougher on the Bulldogs than the previous contest.
“Unfortunately, we had to exert a lot of energy against Powell in the first game,” Edwards said. “You could tell the girls were a little tired.”
He also mentioned how Cody had a fast-moving offense that they just were not ready for yet, adding, “Hopefully, next time we play them we will have a good plan to slow down their offense.” Cody came out with the victory, 40-19.
The Lady Bulldogs traveled to Powell Monday afternoon with the A team falling 33-24 and the B team dropping the game 18-10. Lovell will host Worland Tuesday at 4:15 p.m. following the Thanksgiving break.
