Lady Grizz celebrate season, honor team leaders at awards banquet
The Rocky Mountain High School Lady Grizz basketball team gathered Tuesday night to celebrate a season defined not just by wins and losses but by growth and a strong sense of team identity.
Coaches, players, parents and supporters came together for the annual awards banquet, recognizing both team accomplishments and the individuals who helped shape the season.
Head coach Justin Moss reflected on the year and its challenges, emphasizing that the lessons learned will carry forward.
“Growth is bigger than the scoreboard,” Moss said, a message that echoed throughout the evening as the team looked back on a season of development and perseverance.
The Lady Grizz faced one of the toughest schedules in 2A basketball, competing against multiple top-ranked teams across classifications, including No. 1 teams in 3A, 2A and 1A. Despite the difficulty of that schedule, the team stayed connected and continued to improve throughout the season.
The night’s major awards recognized players who stood out for their performance, effort and leadership.
Sawyer Bassett was named Miss Defense, honored for her impact on the defensive end and her willingness to take on a variety of roles. Coaches highlighted her steady improvement throughout the season and her ability to contribute in multiple areas.
Kaysie Cooley earned Miss Offense, leading the team with her scoring and offensive leadership. Cooley also had a standout year from beyond the arc, knocking down 52 three-pointers, one of the top marks in recent program history. Moss pointed to her growth under pressure and her ability to elevate the team’s play throughout the season.
The Heart & Hustle Award went to Lauren Bassett, a senior leader who consistently set the tone with her effort, toughness and competitiveness. A three-time all-state player, Bassett finished her career among the program’s top performers and was recognized for her physical play, leadership and commitment to the team.
Halle Grandalen received the Spirit of the Grizz Award, recognizing her consistency, presence in the post, and team-first approach. Grandalen led the team in rebounds and blocked shots, providing a steady and dependable presence throughout the season.
Moss noted that many of the award winners also served as team captains, helping guide the program both on and off the court.
The season’s theme, “Amplifier,” focused on growth in all aspects of the game, mental, physical, technical and tactical, while emphasizing accountability and teamwork. Players were encouraged to “play as one,” give full effort and lead by example.
Beyond the awards, the evening offered a chance to reflect on the shared experiences that define a season – long bus rides, tough practices, close games, and the relationships built along the way. Moss reminded players that those moments are what endure long after the final score.
Looking ahead, he emphasized the importance of continued work.
“The work you put in between now and next year will be the deciding factor,” Moss said, encouraging players to stay committed in the offseason.
For the three graduating seniors – Keylee Christiansen, Bassett and Layla Gardner – the night marked both a celebration and a farewell. Coaches thanked them for their leadership and contributions, expressing confidence that they will carry the lessons of the program forward.
In the end, the banquet served as a reminder that while seasons come and go, the growth, relationships and memories built along the way are what last the longest.
