Lady Grizz sweep Meeteetse ahead of conference tournaments
The Rocky Mountain Lady Grizz wrapped up the regular season with a sweep at Meeteetse Tuesday afternoon, winning the ‘A’ game 25-20 and the ‘B’ contest 20-8.
With A coach Doug Arnold out of town, Taylor Winland coached the A team and Julie Winland handled the B squad, Taylor Winland said.
The A game was close at the half, with Rocky Mountain clinging to a one-point lead, 14-13. The Lady Grizz edged ahead with a 6-5 third quarter advantage, then shut the home team down 5-2 to win by five points.
Brooklyn Larsen led the Lady Grizz with 8 points, and Kennedy Brimhall added 6 points, Leah Haslem and Annie Crosby 4 points each, Taylor Grandalen 2 and Sawyer Bassett 1.
“We gutted out a win,” Taylor said. “It was an ugly win, but I’ll take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day. We found a way to make plays at the end of the game to secure the lead. We got a five-point lead at the end of the game and managed to burn 1:25 off the clock. I was impressed by our girls’ patience and understanding the situation.”
Rocky shut out Meeteetse 8-0 in the first quarter of the B game and led 12-4 at halftime.
Rocky doubled Meeteetse 8-4 in the second half to win by 12.
Grandalen led Rocky with 10 points, and Daizy Weinand added 6, Elle Ganoung and Finnley Weinand 2 apiece.
“We got out to a commanding lead and maintained that the rest of the game,” Winland said. “The girls have shown consistent improvement every week, and we are playing our best basketball going into tournament.”
The Lady Grizz will play in their respective Big Horn Conference tournaments Saturday, with the seventh grade in Basin (Riverside) and the eighth grade in Shoshoni.
Winand said the A team (10-4) will enter the eighth-grade tournament as the number two seed and will play the winner of the Burlington-Meeteetse game at noon. The B team (4-6) is also the number two seed heading into the seventh-grade tournament and will play the winner of the Burlington-Riverside game at 10 a.m.
