Lady Grizzlies making waves in 2A West conference
Rocky Mountain High School won a must-win Class 2A conference volleyball match Friday, defeating Thermopolis in three of four sets as the regular season nears its end.
The Lady Grizz won 25-10, 25-18, 23-25, 25-22. Sawyer Bassett led Rocky Mountain with 14 kills, 14 digs, 21 good passes on serve receive and seven aces.
“I thought we played well ... couldn’t hold on for the win in the third set but finished up in the fourth,” coach Kay Townsend said.
After winning the first two sets, Rocky Mountain dropped a close third set before closing out the match in the fourth.
Rocky Mountain traveled to Lovell on Saturday, falling to the Class 3A Lady Bulldogs in three sets, 25-12, 25-16, 25-18.
“I was very proud of the way that we held our own against Lovell in the second and third games,” Townsend said.
Leah Haslem and Kaysie Cooley served without an error, and Cooley recorded two aces. The team’s new jump program contributed to blocks and rallies between the teams, Townsend said.
Rocky Mountain hosts two more must-win conference matches this week. Shoshoni visits Cowley on Friday for a “pink out” match benefiting Tammy McFarlane as she battles breast cancer. The junior varsity match begins at 4 p.m. Rocky Mountain then hosts Class 2A conference opponent Wind River on Saturday, with play beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday also marks senior night.
The Class 2A West Regional Tournament will take place October 30-31 in Lander.
