Lady Mustangs battle back to top Cody

Heading over to Cody Thursday, the Lovell eighth-grade Lady Mustangs basketball team dominated in a 29-20 win.
Trailing 12-10 at halftime, the Lady Mustangs gained a foothold on the Lady Broncs in the fourth quarter, scoring 12 points to finish the game with a nine-point lead.
“We had a great win at Cody on Thursday,” coach Josey Allen said. “It was one of our best defensive efforts as we held them to the fewest points of any of our conference opponents so far. It was a tight game until the fourth quarter when we really clamped down defensively and we attacked and shared the ball well.
“We still want to improve on the number of turnovers … but we are really happy with the effort on the defensive end and winning on the road against a team that is usually the top team in our league.”
Ava Edwards led the team with 11 points, and Avery Walker added 7 points, Caylee Herman 6, Ali Walker 4 and Addie Weber 1.
Seventh grade
The seventh-grade A team worked hard against Cody at home Thursday. The Lady Mustangs trailed by just three points at halftime, 11-8, but fell behind in the second half in a 28-14 loss.
“We came out well prepared with energy and played well in the first half,” coach Collins McArthur said. “We fell apart a little bit mentally and emotionally (in the second half), and we let some stuff get to us into our heads.
“With the girls this week we are working on addressing those things like staying focused in our games, because it can change quickly if we lose focus. That is one we want to concentrate on as players and coaches, that we stay focused on the game and what is going on and do not let any of the outside distractions get in our way. Overall, the effort has been really
good, and it is just a matter of being consistent and playing with the same intensity and fundamentals in each game.”
Morgan Harshman scored 8 points, for the Lady Mustangs, Kendra Allen and Brynlee Spanier 3 points each.
The seventh grade B team beat Cody 19-16. The Mustangs trailed by one point at halftime but came back to a 14-14 tie at the end of the fourth quarter. Lovell outscored Cody 5-2 in overtime.
Daisy Carpenter led Lovell with 5 points, and Ariana Nuttall and Braylynn Krantz added 3 points each, Leela Hodges, Kelsey Mangus, Haven Hecker and Kinzie Blain 2 points apiece.
The Lady Mustangs are off for the Thanksgiving holiday and will return to action Tuesday, Nov. 28, against Worland, with the seventh-grade team on the road and the eighth grade at home with both starting at 4:15 p.m.
