Letter to the Editor: Shelter animals make the best pets

Dear Editor,

If one would go to Greater Good/Animal Rescue they could learn a lot while, for free, helping people, animals and more.

With that said, here is a stat and what we can do about it or should be doing.

Approximately 6.5 million animals enter a shelter each year; of those, 1 million are euthanized; a female cat, for seven years will have 420,000 babies, this is why to neuter and spay; generally, once done the pet is a better pet and gets along better with other pets that might be present.

This brings us to puppy mills. They need to be outlawed. Recently, a breeder could not sell his puppies, so he killed them. Buying a pet from a pet shop or anywhere else means more confinement and usually abuses for the mom kept in a cage.

We encourage Adopt, Don’t Shop for the above reasons. Adopted pets can be and often are pure bred dogs/cats that have been turned in; however, a mixed breed lives longer, is easier to get along with and has many more wonderful, fun traits. Type into Google “advantages of a shelter pet,” then add canine or feline. Rabbits make wonderful pets also and are found in shelters.

The figures for euthanasia are 80% for felines and 20% for canines. Euthanasia at most shelters is very painful, and they are all put in the same pen, some die faster than others and, now and then, they don’t die completely or take an extended time to do so.
