Letter to the Editor: Trump has declared war on the American people

To the Editor:

The government is shut down – but may be open by the time this letter is printed, and let’s be clear: this is not the fault of the Democrats. The GOP, under the influence of Donald Trump and his allies, has weaponized dysfunction as a political strategy. This isn’t gridlock – it’s sabotage.

Trump has declared a rhetorical war on the American people, painting our cities as war zones and our citizens as enemies. These fabrications serve only to justify authoritarian overreach and distract from the real threats to our democracy. Project 2025, a blueprint for dismantling constitutional checks and consolidating executive power, is already halfway implemented. Its goals are not hidden – they are proudly broadcast by those who seek to remake America in the image of white Christian nationalism.

Religion, once a source of moral guidance, is now being exploited to push an exclusionary ideology. The Republican Party has abandoned pluralism in favor of purity tests. Trump himself has shown open defiance of the Constitution, ignoring court orders and undermining judicial authority. His recent speech to the military was riddled with falsehoods and dangerous rhetoric, labeling fellow Americans as “the enemy within.”

Meanwhile, ICE operates with impunity, using tactics that echo the darkest chapters of history – storming building, dragging children and elders into the streets. These are criminal acts, yet accountability is nowhere to be found. Our First Amendment rights are under siege, and the Supreme Court, once a guardian of liberty, now enables racial profiling and grants Trump immunity from consequences.

If you can watch these abuses unfold and still claim to understand what America stands for, I urge you to reconsider. And to those who proudly fly “Don’t Tread on Me” flags – where is your outrage now? If ever there was a time to stand against tyranny, this is it.

We must speak out. We must resist. Silence is complicity.
