The Lovell High School golf teams traveled to Buffalo last week to compete in a two-day tournament to prepare for the conference tournament to be held at the Foster Gulch Golf Course today (Thursday) and tomorrow.

“Buffalo is always a special week on the schedule,” coach Dane Robertson said. “The course is both gorgeous and a test of resilience, and there was plenty of resilience needed over the two days.”

Coach Robertson also mentioned how the weather conditions made it tough for the golfers.

“I knew we were in for a particular treat when we got off the bus and were immediately wrapped in the loving arms of Mother Nature’s 40 mph winds,” he said. “The field was extraordinarily large (more than 130 golfers), and the whole course was a constant war zone of
urethane-covered balls flying in the wind.”

For the boys, the scoring averages over the two days were: Kaeson Anderson, 95; Rocco Rael, 101; Jacob Thomas, 105; Kellan Jackson, 110; Kade Durtsche, 110; Jaxon Hayes, 113; Jaxen Baxendale, 116.

The girls’ averages over two days of competition were: Kenley Wilson, 108; Madalyn McCollam, 114; Makinli Mowery, 115.

“The average score on the whole was a lot higher than typical,” Robertson said. “The second day was much calmer, albeit still quite brisk. Our scores came down dramatically for most, and we were where I would have expected us to be scoring-wise.”

He still thinks the team needs to be able to find ways to score, even in unfavorable conditions.

“The lowest round by anyone was shot on that first day in the wind, so that goes to show there are always avenues to get the ball in the hole, no matter the circumstance,” he said.

The Bulldog golfers look forward to hosting the 3A West Conference Championships at Foster Gulch Golf Course on Thursday (10 a.m.) and Friday (9 a.m.).
