LMS eighth graders stop Shoshoni, sweep Powell
Last Thursday, Feb. 13, the Lovell Middle School eighth-grade A team played Shoshoni in Lovell. The Bulldogs were victorious in a tight game, winning 56-53.
Kannon Owen led the team’s offensive efforts with 18 points. Mac Morgan was able to add 15 points and Reigo Romero contributed 12. With both teams using a similar style of play, the matchup was intense from start to finish. Coach Stephany Durtsche was extremely proud of the boys for keeping their heads up the entire game despite the challenge and working as a team by distributing the ball to teammates.
On Tuesday, Lovell’s eighth-grade A and B teams took on the Powell Panthers in Powell. The A team battled their way to a hard-fought win, 44-40. Mac Morgan led the scoring with 18 points, Owens contributed 11 and Mason Leithead was able to add 6 more to the board. Coach Durtsche said it was a character-building game, noting that the boys were forced to stay mentally tough throughout the game. She was proud of the team for continuing to play as a whole, even when the times were rough. This week, they will be focusing on boxing out and rebounding in preparation for their game against Cody.
The B team was able to secure a double-digit win, 37-27. Easton Morgan gave the team 11 points, and Harper Morgan scored 8. Hudson Miller was right behind scoring 7 points, and Mike Corina was able to give the team 6 more points.
“The boys did a good job being coachable throughout the game and brought the intensity on defense to secure the win,” Durtsche said.
The Lovell seventh graders hosted Powell Tuesday, with the A team falling 43-34. Bradley Mickelson scored 10 points, Dane Wilson 9, Xaden Baxendale 5, Jackson Sanders and Mason Kitchen 3 each, Miles Bischoff and Garrett Henley 2 apiece.
This Thursday, Feb. 20, the teams will play Cody. The eighth graders will play at Lovell, and the seventh-grade teams will make their way down to Cody. The teams will wrap up the week with a B team jamboree on Saturday, where the eighth grade will play in Lander and the seventh grade will play in Cody.
