LMS seventh graders topple Greybull, fall to Worland

Last week on Monday, Nov. 3, the Lovell Middle School seventh-grade girls basketball team played their first game of the season in Greybull, winning 51-5. Coach Collin McArthur said, “The girls played fantastically for their first game. They were very unselfish and helped everyone to get a basket.”

This even led to a few Greybull parents coming up after the game to thank them for their sportsmanship, McArthur said.

Kylie Nicholls led Lovell with 12 points followed by Emily Sanders with 9 points and Nellie Guccion with 8. Paige Asay added 6 points, and Gemma Walker and Chloe Asay scored 4 points each. Olivia Rael and Catherine Zollman scored 2 points apiece.

“They ran through multiple different offensive sets, with girls in different positions than where they usually played, but they still didn’t miss a beat. I couldn’t have been happier with how they played that first game, and we are excited to see how the rest of the season goes.”

Worland

On Tuesday, the Worland seventh-grade A and B teams traveled to Lovell for a conference game. In the A game the Lady bulldogs played their best during the first quarter yet still found themselves down by 5 points. They were unable to score in the second quarter, which gave them a 24-8 deficit at the half. The offensive struggles continued in the second half as they ended up losing the game by a score of 37-14.

Sanders led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 10 points, going 6 of 8 from the free throw line. Walker scored 3 points, Rael 1. After the game Coach McArther said, “The girls played tough but were not ready for a zone press. We did good against the man to man but had a tough time getting to the hoop.”

The Lady Bulldog B team came out slow in the first quarter, managing only 2 points.  They did come back strong in the second quarter, matching Worland point for point and going into the half down by 7. The second half was a different story. Worland pulled away and won the game with a final score of 28-17.

Guccion led the Lady Bulldogs with 8 points, and Rael, Nicholls, Asay and Walker added 2 points each, MaKynna Mayes 1. Both the Lovell A and B teams didn’t have many players on the team, which meant there were not a lot of substitutions and the girls got tired toward the end of the game, McArthur said. McArther was very positive by focusing on the good that he saw in the games, stating, “The girls played hard, and after we address a few things defensively, I think we will be able to make the changes we need to have a better outcome next time.”
