Local cowboy Hulbert to be inducted into Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame

A well-known local cowboy and silversmith who lived and worked at the Cedarvale Guest Ranch at Hillsboro, Montana, near Barry’s Landing northeast of Lovell for many years will soon be honored with an exhibit at the Lovell-Kane Area Museum.

The exhibit coincides with Hulbert’s upcoming induction into the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame, and museum board president Karen Spragg helped hall of fame executive director Christy Stensland with some information and photography research when Hulbert was nominated this summer.

Spragg said plans are to display some of Hulbert’s silversmith work for a year or two using pieces of his craftsmanship people provide to the museum on loan including belt buckles, spurs, conchos and bolo ties.

The display should be in place, along with a display of Caroline Lockhart items, by the summer of 2025, Spragg said. She intends to attend Hulbert’s induction into the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame on February 8, going with Julie St. John of Billings, who knew Eddy as a young girl when they both lived at Hillsboro.

Spragg said St. John loves to tell stories about Eddy like how her mother didn’t want her to eat candy, but Eddy would give her some when she visited his blacksmith shop at the ranch.
