Local finners help Powell at conference meet

As the state meet nears, the Powell High School boys swim team competed in their conference meet in Newcastle Friday and Saturday.

During this meet, the team performed well and placed third overall. Rocky Mountain senior Will Fuller placed seventh in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.12 and second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.83, which also entered him into the Powell Swimming Hall-of-Fame, beating Brad Rempfer’s record by .01 seconds.

Lovell senior Hugh Carpenter placed second in the 100-yard fly with a time of 55.29 and third in the 200-yard IM in 2:08.38. Junior Gabe Buchholz placed fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5.59.85, which qualified him for State. Buchholz also placed 12th in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:24.36.

Rocky sophomore Ethan Haslem placed 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:27.52 and eighteenth in the 50-yard freestyle in 32.92.

After a last chance meet at Cody Tuesday, the team’s next stop will be the 3A State Championships on February 20-21 in Cheyenne.

So far, Buchholz will be competing in the 50-yard free, 100-yard free, 500-yard free and the 200-yard IM. Fuller will be competing in the 50-yard free, 100-yard free, 200-yard free, 100-yard back, 100-yard breast, 100-yard fly and the 200-yard IM.

Carpenter is competing in the 50-yard free, 100-yard free, 200-yard free, 500-yard free, 100-yard back, 100-yard breast, 100-yard fly and the 200-yard IM.
