Local finners swim well in Powell and Lander
On Friday, Jan. 23, the Powell boys swim team competed in the Powell Triangular. There were several local students who placed in the top eight in their events.
Lovell senior Hugh Carpenter placed first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.73 and first in the 100-yard fly with a time of 57.75. Rocky Mountain senior Will Fuller placed first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.48 and second in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:03.65.
Lovell junior Gabe Buchholz placed second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:10.44 and fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:26.67. Rocky sophomore Ethan Haslem placed sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:30.03. Haslem also competed in the 50-yard freestyle, placing 10th.
Saturday, the team travelled to Lander for the Bruce Gresly Invite. Fuller placed first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.32 and seventh in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:04.21. Carpenter placed second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 23.75, only 0.43 seconds behind Fuller. Carpenter also placed third in the 100-yard fly with a time of 58.93. Other swimmers included Haslem, who competed in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke, and Buchholz, who competed in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard fly.
During these two meets, Buchholz earned a spot at State in the 50-yard freestyle. The team’s next stop will be in Buffalo on Friday, Jan. 30.
