Local students help Powell finners at Worland

The Powell High School swim team had a very successful meet in a dual against Worland High School Saturday. The team had a handful of placings from Lovell and Rocky Mountain high schools.

To start off, Powell took first place in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:57.29. The team included Will Fuller, Conner Mayes and Hugh Carpenter. In the boys 50-yard freestyle, Carpenter took first place with a time of 24.31 seconds, Fuller took second with a time of 24.53 seconds and Taggart Shumway placed fourth in 27.23 seconds. Shumway also placed first in the boys 1-meter diving event with a final score of 151.20.

Mayes took first in the boys 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:09.24, and Carpenter took first in the boys 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.03 seconds, followed by Gabe Buchholtz in second with a time of 1:01.48.

Powell also took first place in the boys 200-yard freestyle relay. The team included Buchholtz and Shumway with a time of 1:50.75. Fuller took first in the boys 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.06, followed by Buchholtz in fifth place at 1:16.92. Mayes also swam to first place in the boys 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:19.18.

Head coach Stephanie Warren said the athletes’ performances were overall amazing, and they have improved a lot over the season. Added LHS junior Carpenter, “The team did really well. The newer swimmers are starting to get the hang of things, and our more experienced swimmers are continuing to excel. We have some really good underclassmen coming up to carry on our legacy.”

The Powell swimming team’s next meets will both be home meets at the Powell Aquatic Center on January 10 and 11. The Saturday meet is the large Gene Dozah Invitational.
