Family and friends gathered from near and far to celebrate the 90th birthday of George Lomand Fowler (Lom) on Sunday, March 2, at the Big Horn Federal Bank in Lovell.

He and his wife, Lorna, welcomed his four children: Stephen (Lovell), Ben and Karen (Elko, Nevada), Matthew (Lander) and Colleen (Rock Springs). Accompanying his children were five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, his brother, sisters-in-law and numerous cousins and relatives. About 35 relatives attended the dinner, followed by around 60 friends who shared cake and ice cream with him.

Lom was born in Lovell and has lived most of his long life right here. He drove truck for Ken Mangus after high school, which took him all over the region. He was employed by Taggart Construction, working on the I-80 when he met his future wife, Lorna Whittaker, at a café in Evanston. She was only 17 at the time, but the attraction was real, and they married a year later in 1960. They moved to Lovell in 1966 and have been here since then. Friends can find Lom many days “hanging out” at Minchow’s Sinclair gas station and convenience store.
