Making the short trip south to Greybull on Saturday, the Lovell Bulldogs competed well at the Bill Gerrard Memorial Invitational, winning the boys division and the girls placing a strong second behind Worland.

According to head coach Joshua Sanders, the Lovell boys team produced 20 placers and set 10 personal records, while the girls had 34 placers and nine PRs.

“I’ll take that,” Sanders said of the 34 placers. “This was a good placing meet for us, and the scores reflect that.”

The Lovell boys scored 140 points to top Worland with 118 points, and the Lovell girls scored 153.5 points, second to Worland with 173.5.

“It was a smaller meet, so it was our numbers, but we have strengths, too, which is how we ended up winning it,” Sanders said. “It was good to see the girls place second. This is one of the stronger girls teams we’ve had in a long time.”

Sanders said Monday he was still deciding between Hunter Krei and Owen Walker as the male athlete of the week. Both had outstanding meets.

Krei has been nursing a hip injury but won both the 100- and 200-meter dash. He ran the 100 in 11.17, close to his personal record of 11.11, and he did set a PR in the 200, winning the event and qualifying for State in 22.80.

“The hip is kind of an ongoing thing, but he felt good Saturday,” Sanders said. “His 200 time was really, really outstanding.”

Hot on his heels in the 200 was Matthew Newman, who placed second and qualified for State in 22.87.

“They were cruising, that’s for sure,” Sanders said. “Those are the number four and five times all time at LHS.”

Owen Walker placed seventh in the 100 at 12.23.

Counting the 400-meter relay, Newman has qualified for State in eight events. He also won the 110-meter high hurdles Saturday, running a time of 15.66.

In running the 200, Newman was working to get his speed up for the 400 meters and the 300-meter hurdles, Sanders said, noting that it’s better to work on speed at a meet than in practice because, with adrenalin pumping due to competition, times are faster.

Senior Jacob Thomas ran a strong time of 2:12.46 in the 800 meters to win the race, but he ran even faster in the 3,200-meter relay, running his split in 2:07, Sanders said. The team of Thomas, Isaac Sanders, Grant Rose and Rick Jensen placed third in the 3,200 relay in 9:43.54.

Rose placed sixth in the 1,600 meters in 5:59.32, followed by Ethan Hendershot, who placed seventh in 6:02.23, a personal record. Gabe Buchholz nearly placed, finishing ninth in 6:07.43.

Sanders placed third in the 3,200 meters, running the eight laps in 12:12.15.

“I like the way he runs,” Coach Sanders said. “I think he’s going to get stronger and stronger in that event.”

Walker won the triple jump with a leap of 43-5¼, which qualified him for State.

“He’s been looking really good in practice,” Sanders said. “He’s going to be a big-time competitor in that event. He’ll be pushing Matthew.”

Walker also won the high jump at 6-3.

Kaeson Anderson placed second in the triple jump at 40-6¾, a PR, and second in the high jump at 6-1. Nate Cornia placed sixth in the long jump, hitting the sand at 17-10, and Dean Anderson placed eighth at 17-8, a PR.

In the throws, Tazz McArthur won the discus at 137-4, and Grant Hill placed fifth with a personal-record toss of 121-6. McArthur placed second in the shot put with a throw of 43-2 ½, and Brody Muller was eighth at 37-9½.
