Lovell FCCLA competes well at state

Lovell High School FCCLA members competed at the State FCCLA Leadership Conference the week before last, earning multiple medals and recognitions across several events.

FCCLA is a student-led leadership organization where members participate in activities throughout the year, including meetings, community service projects and FCCLA Week events. Many of these activities can be turned into competitive presentations called STAR Events, which are judged at the state level.

“FCCLA gives students the chance to really take ownership in what they’re doing and build leadership skills they’ll use later in life,” said advisor Paige Culwell.

Senior Hugh Carpenter represented Lovell as a state officer, carrying out his responsibilities throughout the year and at the state conference. He helped lead workshops for members and assisted both on and off stage. Carpenter was also recognized as an All-State FCCLA medalist, one of the highest honors awarded for leadership and service. His role as a state officer and this recognition highlighted his commitment to the organization.

In STAR Events, which are national-level competitions, Cecilia Collins earned a silver medal in Early Childhood Education, qualifying her for nationals. Lovell students also competed in several state-level events. In Cookie Baking, Eleanor Gard earned a bronze medal. In Food Art, Savannah Prentiss earned a gold medal, Angela Lopez earned silver and Jaylee Scheeler earned bronze. The Quiz Bowl team, made up of Carpenter, Gard, Ashley Mangus, Haley Sanders and Scheeler, earned gold medals, with Carpenter serving as team captain. 

“At the state conference, students are able to show what they’ve worked on all year and be recognized for it,” Culwell said.

Students who score 80% or higher can earn medals, and gold and silver medalists in STAR Events qualify for the national competition. The national qualifiers will have the opportunity to compete at the FCCLA National Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., from July 6–10.
