Lovell freshman girls, JVs win big
The LHS freshman girls basketball team opened New Year with a makeup game against the Cody frosh Thursday night and powered to a 51-26 win.
Team illness had prevented Cody from coming to Lovell for a scheduled contest on December 16.
The Lady Bulldogs jumped on top early and powered to an 18-4 lead after the first quarter as six players got into the scoring column. They outscored the fillies 33-22 the rest of the way.
Brynnlee Spanier led the Lovell squad with 16 points, and Morgan Harshman joined her in double figures with 12. Myles May added 7 points, Macie Anderson, Kinzie Blain, Gracie Angell and Kelsey Mangus 4 apiece.
The Lovell freshmen will return to action on Monday, Jan. 19, traveling to Worland for a 5 p.m. tip-off, then play Rocky Mountain in Cowley on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.
JVs win big
The Lovell junior varsity team stopped Rocky Mountain in Cowley Friday evening, 53-18. Lovell shut out the home team 11-0 in the first quarter and outscored the Lady Grizz 23-6 in the second to lead 34-6 at halftime. Lovell outscored Rocky 19-12 in the second half.
Ava Edwards led the Lady Bulldogs with 10 points, and Harshman, Kandace Asay and Kaydree Owens added 7 points each, Anderson and Spanier 6 apiece, Angell 5, May 3 and Jenna Hessenthaler 2.
Charlee Welling scored 7 for the Lady Grizz, Kennedy Brimhall 4, Brooklyn Larsen, Sawyer Bassett and Annie Crosby 2 each and Avery Thomas 1.
“Our JV team has been playing really well,” coach Jen Hessenthaler said. “All of the girls who go in are able to contribute. The girls are moving the ball well.
“Rocky plays a zone, and I was very proud of how our girls scored in our zone offense. We are still working on crashing the boards offensively and consistently boxing out defensively.”
The JVs fell at Cody Tuesday afternoon, 43-39.
