The Lovell freshman girls and boys basketball teams are getting plenty of chances to get back into shape after the holiday break.
The squads traveled to Buffalo on Saturday to face some solid competition at the Buffalo Freshman Tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs went 3-0 at the tournament, defeating Buffalo, Wheatland and Campbell County.
To start the day, the Lady Bulldogs defeated Buffalo 48-33.
Celeste Lindsay led the way with 19 points, and Jenna Hessenthaler and Kaydree Owens added 6, Brooklin Clark 5, Hannity Felkins and Kindle Collins 4, Kira Collins and Kandace Asay 2 each.
Next, Lovell dominated Wheatland with a final score of 49-17.
Lindsay was again the top scorer with 14. Clark finished with 10, and Owens had 8. Asay, Felkins and Kindle Collins had 4 each, Hessenthaler 3 and Kenley Wilson 2.
Lastly, the Lady Bulldogs kept the momentum and ran away with a 57-18 win over Campbell County.
Lindsay again scored 14, Clark 11, Kindle Collins 10, Asay 8, Felkins 6, Kira Collins 4 and both Owens and Hessenthaler 2 apiece.
“The girls played hard and aggressive, and we played good team ball,” coach Dan Wolvington said. “Defensively, we still have some room for improvement, but it was overall a great weekend.”
With a quick turnaround, the Lady Bulldogs headed to Powell on Monday night to take on the Lady Panthers.
Powell came out aggressive and confident, and the Lady Bulldogs fought hard throughout the game but were never able to capture the lead to fall 47-41 to the Lady Panthers.
Lindsay put in 19 points, Hessenthaler 7, Asay and Clark with 4 apiece, Kira Collins and Wilson 3 and Kindle Collins 2.
The freshman girls game scheduled in Greybull on Tuesday was cancelled prior to the event.
Freshmen boys
The Lovell freshmen boys also made the trip to Buffalo on Saturday but went winless on the day.
To open the day, the Bulldogs battled hard against the home team from Buffalo before falling 35-31.
Sam Mayes led the scoring effort with 9, and Cash Wassmer added 8, Tazz McArthur 6, Nate Cornia 4 and both Jaxon Clark and Rocco Rael 2.
Then, Lovell played only two quarters against Glenrock in a game that ended with the Bulldogs down 31-12.
Mayes was able to score 5, McArthur 3, Clark and Rael 2 apiece.
The Bulldogs tried to bounce back against Douglas but still came up short, 55-37.
Cornia finished with 10, Wassmer 8, Clark 6, McArthur 4, Mayes 3 and the trio of Anderson, Capers and Rael 2 apiece.
“It was a long, tough day of competition,” coach Michael Jameson said. “We had some good moments but are still struggling with consistency.”
On Monday, the Bulldogs headed to Powell knowing they had their work cut out for them. The effort was there but Powell’s hustle led them to a 48-26 victory over the Bulldogs.
Wassmer and McArthur scored 6 each. Cornia and Rael added 4 apiece while Mayes, Weston Hendershot and Clark ended with 2.
On Tuesday, the Bulldogs had their fifth road game in four days as they traveled to Greybull to face the Buffs.
The Bulldogs were determined to change the outcome and walked away with their lone win of the week as they defeated Greybull 47-25.
Declan Mayes helped the Bulldogs offense with 16 points, and Sam Mayes had 10, Rael 6, Wassmer and Cornia 4, McArthur 3 and both Hendershot and Clark 2.
“It was a mental boost we needed,” Jameson said of the win in Greybull. “We clicked a lot better on both ends of the floor.”
