Lovell Lady Bulldogs brings balanced attack to Rocky Mountain gym
The third-ranked Class 3A Lovell Lady Bulldogs brought one of the state’s best records into the Rocky Mountain High School gym Friday night and left with a 44–33 win, but not before the Rocky Mountain Lady Grizzlies delivered a tough, physical effort in front of a packed crowd with strong fan support from both schools.
“We always look at things we need to fix, but there were some really encouraging things we did well,” Rocky Mountain head coach Justin Moss said. “I thought our girls competed, rebounded and stayed engaged defensively the entire game.”
Lovell jumped out early, using an 11–3 first-quarter run to take a 16–8 lead after one. After Lauren Bassett opened the game with a strong drive to the basket, the Bulldogs answered with a three-pointer and jumper from Avery Walker to seize early momentum. Rocky Mountain worked to settle offensively but stayed active on the glass, limiting second-chance opportunities through strong team rebounding.
Rocky showed signs of momentum early in the second quarter, trimming the deficit to 18–13 behind consecutive baskets from Bassett. Lovell responded with a key stretch from freshman Morgan Harshman, who scored seven straight points to push the Bulldogs’ lead back to double digits. Lovell carried a 27–15 advantage into halftime, despite some inconsistency on the offensive end.
“As you come back from break, there are always some things you struggle with,” Lovell head coach Brian May said. “Execution-wise, we didn’t really do what we wanted to do, and I felt like they slowed us down a little bit in transition.”
Defense took over in the third quarter, with both teams scoring just six points. Rocky Mountain forced contested shots and disrupted Lovell’s rhythm, keeping the game within reach. An old-fashioned three-point play by Ali Walker early in the fourth pushed Lovell’s lead to 15, but the Lady Grizzlies continued to fight. Rocky closed the game on an 8–3 run, capped by a Keylee Christiansen jumper, and outscored Lovell 12–11 in the final quarter, but the early margin proved too much to overcome.
“We felt like we could get pressure and turnovers, which we did,” May said. “We just didn’t convert those turnovers into points like we had done in previous games. The positive thing is our girls just kept grinding and kept fighting, and that helped us pull out a good win.”
Lovell’s strength came from balance and depth. The Lady Bulldogs placed nine players in the scoring column and were led by Harshman with 11 points in just 15 minutes of action. Avery Walker and Ali Walker added 7 points apiece, Kaydree Owens scored 5 and Hannity Felkins chipped in 4. Despite shooting just 2-of-21 from the three-point line, Lovell found enough offense through ball movement, transition opportunities and inside scoring to maintain control.
Free throw shooting played a quiet but notable role in the game. Rocky Mountain went 10-of-17 at the line, led by Bassett, who finished 5-of-9 and consistently attacked the basket to draw contact. Lovell shot 8-of-15 from the stripe, with Brooklin Clark leading the Lady Bulldogs by going 3-of-6. Felkins added a perfect 2-of-2 effort at the line. Neither team dominated at the stripe, but both relied on free throws at key moments as defenses tightened and scoring opportunities became harder to find.
Rocky Mountain was led by senior Bassett, who scored a game-high 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting and went 5-of-9 from the free-throw line while playing through a hand injury that had sidelined her for much of winter break. Bassett also added 8 rebounds and 3 steals. Senior Keylee Christiansen finished with 7 points, and junior Kaysie Cooley scored 3. Halle Grandalen added 2 points and 9 rebounds.
“When you play teams like this, they expose what you need to fix,” Moss said. “But I was pleased with our effort and our rebounding, and I thought our defense really ramped up as the game went on.”
