Track and field has officially started for the athletes at Lovell Middle School. Practices began March 24, with their first meet scheduled for April 4. Unfortunately, due to the weather, that meet was postponed until April 26, but the middle schoolers were finally able to showcase their abilities at the meet in Shoshoni this past Saturday, April 12.

This meet was highly anticipated across the area, as shown by the 25 schools that participated. The athletes were competing in two divisions, the Youth division (fifth and sixth grade) and the Junior High division (seventh and eighth grade).

Eighth-grade boy top 10 placers were Oscar Garcia, eighth in the 1,600-meter run, and Zavier Heater, eighth in the 200-meter hurdles.

Representing the girl throwers for Lovell Middle School, eighth grader Randi Ayotte placed sixth in discus.

Showing up for the seventh-grade boys track and field athletes, Garrett Henley placed ninth in the long jump and 10th in the 400-meter dash. Bradley Mickelson took sixth in the high jump.

Seventh grader Rubie Weber performed very well, beginning with securing first place in the triple jump with a leap of 31-8. Weber also ran a 30.44 in the 200 meters, putting her in second place, and she hopped to a sixth-place finish in the long jump.

At their inaugural meet, the sixth-grade Bulldogs showed they were ready to compete by bringing home nine top 10 finishes. James Sanders had a successful meet to represent the boys. Sanders won first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.81, leading the pack of 80 contestants in that event. Sanders later went on to place seventh in discus.

The sixth-grade girls also represented well at the Shoshoni meet with four girls placing top five in their respective events. Makynna Mayes placed third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 15.06 and fourth in the 200-meter dash, completing her event in 31.79. Chloe Asay placed third in both the 800 and 1,600 runs with times of 2:59.71 and 6:28.93. Nellie Guccion topped Asay’s time in the 1,600 at 6:16.99, putting her in second for this event. Over in the field events, Gemma Walker leapt 24-11 in triple jump, securing second place for her. Kylie Nicholls also competed in triple jump and placed ninth.

With this week’s track meet being cancelled also, the LMS thinclads only have two more meets before the conference meet, starting with the Rocky Mountain Invitational on Friday, April 25, in Cowley.
