Lovell wrestlers show well at Ron Thon, Powell dual

The Lovell Bulldogs faced one of their toughest challenges of the season this weekend at the Ron Thon Memorial Tournament, held Thursday through Saturday in Riverton. The all-class tournament featured 39 of the top teams across Wyoming’s 2A, 3A and 4A divisions, bringing together the best competition the state has to offer.

Lovell sent five varsity wrestlers to the event. They were Hudsen Mickelson (126), Tyler Wilkerson (132), Mason Christenson (138), Zayden Stahl (150) and Owen Hill (165). The Bulldogs had a difficult start to the weekend but came out with a few podium finishes.

Senior Hill drew a tough opening round matchup, facing the eventual Ron Thon champion. Despite the loss, Hill wrestled with intensity and resilience throughout the tournament. Head coach Ty Hecker was proud of Hill’s constant pressure and movement, which made it difficult for opponents to score.

“Owen is wrestling very well and does not quit,” Hecker said. “He is on pace to have a strong finish to his senior year.”

Two of Lovell’s junior varsity wrestlers had successful matches in the tournament. Sophomore Monte Blank competed at 190 pounds and finished third overall with a 4–1 record. Hecker highlighted Blank’s toughness in the neutral position and credited his grit and continued development during his sophomore season. Porter Blau also placed, earning sixth at 157 pounds with a 3–3 record. Hecker said, “Blau’s recent success reflects his hard work in the practice room. His performance earned him a spot on varsity this upcoming week.”

The girls team also competed over the weekend at a state preview tournament. Hecker said the tournament provided a valuable learning experience for the girls.

“They’re young, but they’re tough,” he said. “Once we get their mindset where it needs to be, I believe we can make a push at Regionals and work toward their first appearance at the state tournament.”

Lovell took on defending 3A state champion Powell in a Tuesday night dual. They fell 42-33, giving up some valuable points due to injury and illness. The Bulldogs were forced to forfeit three weight classes but responded with an aggressive approach.

“Coming off a tough week, we came out aggressive with a predator mindset,” Hecker said.

Mickelson started the event well with a pin using his trademark cradle. Freshman Zander Stahl stepped into varsity action and delivered a first-period pin. Christenson also pinned his ranked opponent through relentless pressure. Hill wrestled a full three periods, wearing down his opponent to secure a decision.

The dual was decided in the final matches. Despite the result, head coach Hecker was pleased with the team’s effort. “In the end, we came out aggressive,” he said.

Lovell will host Tongue River in a dual Friday at 5 p.m. at Lovell Middle School. They will then compete Saturday at the Memorial Tournament in Greybull, beginning at 10 a.m.
