Minnows worth every buck: Buck’s Baits offers quality live minnows for fishing enthusiasts
Buck’s Baits is a state licensed bait shop that commercially produces 2½-inch live fathead minnows for anyone planning their next fishing adventure. According to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, live bait fish must be purchased from a licensed live bait fish dealer or caught with a valid trapping and seining license for the area where you will be fishing.
“Whenever I wanted to go fishing, I could never find any live minnows,” said Jay Buck, owner of Buck’s Baits. “I went to Powell and Cody, but none had live bait. I thought this was ridiculous, so I decided to sell minnows. I buy these minnows from Arkansas, where they grow commercially, and I care for them. Hopefully, more people like me will be interested in good quality minnows.”
Buck said using live minnows is the best way to get fish compared to other baits. He said it is what fish like trout, bass and catfish like to go after.
“Minnows are naturally scented bait, and it is what fish like to go after,” Buck said. “What are worms to a fish? A fish wants something better than a worm. These minnows are fatheads that are bred for baiting, and they put out a good scent each time you go out fishing.”
Buck said some fishermen might have a different opinion on what bait to use. He said fish will bite on anything; however, minnows give a better advantage to getting a great catch every time you go fishing at the river or lake.
“I don’t even know why a fish would want a nightcrawler,” Buck said. “Every fisherman has a different opinion on what the best bait is. People will argue that a nightcrawler is the best bait, which I disagree with. Minnows work much better because they are alive, and fish will go after them because of their scent and movement. The best way to catch a fish is to give the fish what they want, and minnows are the bait to use.”
